Notes

Portrayal

We will be portraying the 35th Alabama Infantry, Company E, at the Mississippi Stands event on February 23rd through 25th, 2018. We will be forming a battalion with the 31st Alabama, Company F, and the 15th Mississippi. The battalion commander will be Colonel Scotty Myers, and the overall Confederate commander will be General Duane Hamby of the 1st Division, Southern Reenactors.

Battle Portrayal

Mississippi Stands covers four distinct events; the Siege of Corinth (April 29 – May 30, 1862), the Battle of Iuka (September 19, 1862), Grierson’s Raid on Ripley (April 18, 1863), and the Battle of Harrisburg (AKA: Battle of Tupelo, July 14 – 15, 1864).

Registration

Registration is $20.00 before February 5th, 2018, and will be raised to $30.00 after that date. This is a group registration, so contact me to make arrangements.

Event Location

We will be on the Brice’s Crossroads National Battlefield. The address is;

            128 MS-370, Baldwyn, MS 38824

Camp

As of now, there is no site map. As such, I am uncertain where camp will be located. We will camp with the battalion, but most likely within our own company street. We will attempt to have the regulation style infantry camp, with the chapel taking place of the officer’s tent. The kitchen will be to the left of the chapel’s entrance, and the company street starting with the tents after it. A-Frame/Wedge tents should be towards the front, and Shelters, Flies, Lean-tos, and other tentage (including no tent) should be towards the end of the street.

Drill Manual

Time permitting, we will continue with two drills per day. The first, around reveille, will review the school of the soldier, which will include the manual of arms and firing commands. The second, sometime after officer’s call, will review the school of the company, including skirmish drills, and bayonet exercise. The manual for this event’s drill will be William J. Hardee’s “Infantry Tactics”, also known as “Revised Hardee’s”, and “Confederate Hardee’s”, first published in 1861.

Ammunition

We are expecting at least four battles, but possibly five. As such, we will need to have 200 rounds of ammunition per person, giving each individual 40 rounds per battle. It is preferable that these rounds are wrapped in arsenal packs, preferably with Enfield style cartridges, though Springfield and Reenactor styles are acceptable.

Menu

Private Tim Morris will be the Company Cook for this event. As soon as convenient, he will submit a menu, of which I will add to these notes.

La Grange Courses

We may do some lectures for La Grange, including follow ups on Military Structure and Rank Recognition. Cadets will also demonstrate knowledge of the camp layout. Cadets may also be called upon to instruct School of the Soldier at certain times during the event.

Schedule

A schedule has yet to be released, so I’m uncertain as to how they will space out the four or five battles that they are planning. I am suspecting that they will have one battle Friday evening, two battles on Saturday, and two battles on Sunday.
